Georgia was awarded nearly $5 million last week in federal money for enrolling more children in public health insurance programs.
This is the first time Georgia has won the extra funds since the performance bonus program started in 2009. The money helps offset the cost of adding more children to insurance rolls.
States are eligible for the money if they fulfill a list of requirements designed to make it easier for families to sign up for and renew their health benefits. For example, Georgia has eliminated a requirement that applicants interview in-person, which can be difficult for working parents.
Georgia was one of 23 states that won the performance bonus this year.
