The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been asked to conduct an independent investigation after a man suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound while officers were serving warrants Tuesday afternoon in Floyd County.

According to the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and Floyd County Police officers went to a residence in the 4300 block of Martha Berry Highway on July 21 to serve child support warrants on Kyle Stamey and Sharon Stamey.

After receiving permission from the homeowner to enter and search the residence, officers heard a gunshot. Kyle Stamey was found inside a room with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

Deputies immediately provided first aid and applied pressure to the wound until emergency medical personnel arrived. Stamey survived and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Sharon Stamey was taken into custody and booked into the Floyd County Jail on the outstanding child support warrant.

Because personnel from both the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office and Floyd County Police Department were involved in the warrant service, the GBI was contacted to investigate the incident independently.
