Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader says that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is still gathering information about an inmate death at the Chattooga County Jail in December of last year.

On December 15th, Sheriff Schrader said, “Early Thursday morning, December 15, 2022, an inmate at the Chattooga County Jail was found in his cell unresponsive. Jail officers rendered aid  until EMS arrived. The inmate was pronounced deceased by the Coroner. As standard protocol, the GBI was called in to investigate the death. At this time the inmate appears to have died from a self-inflicted injury. More information may be available from the GBI at a later time.”

Sheriff Schrader told WZQZ News on Wednesday that the GBI came and picked up reports from the sheriff’s office last week, and that he is expecting a statement from the GBI “fairly soon”.
