Speculation about the future of the Roper Plant in Lafayette is circulating after the announcement that the manufacturer will no longer be building appliances for General Electric. GE is selling out and auctioning off their entire appliance business in the United States according to announcement made on NBC’s Today Show. The Roper plant in Lafayette builds high-end appliances such as ovens, stoves and washing machines. Several years ago Roper made the switch to building high-end appliances as much of the lower end appliance business was being moved to Mexico. At one time Roper sold appliances under the Roper brand name. The biggest concern right now is that when GE sells its appliance division will they leave Roper intact and continue to manufacture appliances. Currently the Roper Corporation employs around 1800 people in Northwest Georgia.
