Today is groundhog day and we will have the chance to see what the famous Southern groundhog General Beuregard Lee has to say about the extent of winter or if we will have an early spring. General Lee has a pretty good prediction rating….in fact it might be better than most weather forecasters….93%!
The celebration of groundhog day is thought to have come from early German settlers in the United States who brought their European weather folklore to Pennsylvania.
"General" Beau Lee has been recognized for his public service to Americans by four Georgia Governors; and has twice been commended for the accuracy of his predictions by The National Weather Service. He has received honorary doctorates from The University of Georgia – "DWP, Doctor of Weather Prognostication" and Georgia State University – "Doctor of Southern Groundology." He has also earned the very special designation of "Cumulous Barometrist Groundhogolist"– a highly-coveted title among his meteorological peers.
If General Lee sees his shadow today it would mean 6 more weeks of winter, if he doesn’t….we could see an early spring.
