The Georgia Department of Transportation has launched its first online real estate surplus auction platform, giving people across Georgia and beyond a new way to bid on state-owned property that is no longer needed for transportation purposes.

The online marketplace launched August 1 with approximately 200 surplus property parcels available for sale across the state. Properties range from small remnant tracts to development sites as large as 17 acres.

GDOT says moving the auctions online is intended to increase public awareness and make surplus property sales more accessible to potential buyers.

The current inventory includes parcels ranging from approximately 0.05 acres to 17 acres, including irregularly shaped tracts, wetland-mitigated sites and other properties in counties across Georgia.

Katrina Anderson, Assistant State Right of Way Administrator for GDOT, said taking the process online will allow the department to reach a much broader group of potential buyers while providing easier access to property information and the bidding process.

Among the first properties placed up for auction are parcels in Gwinnett and Hall counties, including property along State Route 20 and U.S. Highway 129.

And more property is expected to become available. GDOT says approximately 100 additional surplus parcels are expected to be offered through future online auctions.

Those interested in browsing available properties or participating in an auction must create a free account through the online auction platform.

The move represents a significant change in how GDOT markets surplus real estate, allowing prospective buyers to research available properties and participate in auctions without having to attend an in-person sale.
