The Georgia Department of Transportation says that a long-planned interstate that would stretch across Georgia and go all the way to Texas is “not a good idea”. That was the wording in a report released last week by the Georgia DOT.
The main route for the proposed new interstate would run between Columbus and Augusta.
The state agency says that, in Georgia, only around 3,000 transfer trucks would use the new interstate on a daily basis. That compares to 10,000-18,000 trucks on other Georgia interstates. Backers of the interstate, which would be known as I-14, say that it would link most of the deep South’s major military basis and could be vital for national security.
The Georgia State Legislature went on record in 2019 backing the idea of Interstate 14 and Congress has also expressed support for the addition to the Federal interstate system.
However, at the cost of nearly $30 million per mile of new interstate highway construction, no one is saying where the money would come for the multi-billion dollar project.
