The Georgia Department of Transportation says that they are working on improving downtown Summerville’s drainage issues, but the process is not a quick one.

Grant Waldrop with the Georgia Department of Transportation says that the DOT has already completed some work, and that they are working on a long-term solution that would help alleviate flooding in the downtown area.  At the beginning of September of this year, Summerville was hit with over 14 inches of rain and caused serious flooding issues.  Area residents attended a meeting last week held by the Georgia DOT to talk about what the state agency is doing to help with the problem.

Waldrop told those in attendance that the state is planning to fund the improvements to the area’s drainage issue with new federal funds that have become available.

That funding requires environmental studies that are time consuming.  Waldrop admits that we are still several years away from seeing the project complete.
