The State of Georgia is facing a shortage of nursing and long term care facilities for the state’s veterans. The Georgia Department of Veterans Services operates two nursing facilities for veterans in the state – one in Milledgeville and the other in Augusta, but looking to the future, the state will be facing more long term care for its veterans in the future.
The bulk of the veterans in Georgia’s veterans homes are from the Vietnam War, but as veterans post-9/11 age the state is looking into how to provide care in the future.
Last week, a Georgia Senate committee met to discuss the issue. Right now, there are over 2,000 veterans in Georgia that need placement in a long term care facility. A research center at Kennesaw State University is conducting a study about which locations in Georgia would be best suited to build new veterans homes. Those results are expected later this fall.
Funding is the biggest issue the state is facing. State veterans homes are paid for by both the Federal and state governments.
The committee will meet again in December to discuss the findings from the Kennesaw State study.
