Georgia lawmakers have abandoned a plan to place the state sales tax back on groceries.

An advisory council named by the legislature had recommended reinstating the state sales tax on groceries as part of an overall rewrite of Georgia’s tax code that would also lower the personal and corporate income tax.

The revised proposal would also eliminate plans to tax goods sold by nonprofits, like Girl Scout cookies.
