Most folks have heard the stories about big cats roaming the woods in parts of Chattooga County.  There have been credible and reliable people that have told of hearing a panther "scream" in remote areas of the county.  But according to the Georgia Department of Natural Recourses there is no evidence that "big cats" live in Georgia.

DNR biologists say that the felines did roam the state 100 years ago, but that they were long-since killed out.An article in the Atlanta Journal Constitution over the weekend told of a Georgia magazine editor who is offering a $1,000 cash reward for evidence that can prove panthers, cougars or mountain lions are still in Georgia – anywhere in Georgia.  Nick Carver of Georgia Outdoor News says that his organization is offering the cash to anyone who can submit "the best physical evidence they can legally gather."  The deadline is May 1, 2011.
