Georgia-Pacific announced it will permanently close its containerboard mill in Cedar Springs, Georgia, leading to the layoff of all 535 employees, with most job losses occurring by August 1. There is no fixed schedule for the shutdown, as production will continue to fulfill customer commitments until a safe closure is achieved.

The company will transfer some Cedar Springs production to other mills in Virginia, Oregon, Mississippi, and Alabama due to long-term competitiveness concerns. This decision does not reflect the quality of the employees’ work.

A notification filed with Georgia indicates that there may be layoffs before or after August 1 based on business needs, and some workers may stay to assist with the closure. Salaried employees will receive severance, and the company will negotiate hourly benefits with unions. Georgia-Pacific will also provide support for employees seeking new jobs.
