Georgia Power has backed down from the amount of rate increase that they were originally seeking approval for from the Georgia Public Service Commission. The new proposal from Georgia Power is about 40% less than the original request, but would still raise around $1.8 Billion for the company. Georgia Power contends that they need the rate increase to pay for aging infrastructure. The new proposal from Georgia Power would lessen the monthly impact on customers. The average customer would see around $3.60 per month added to their bill instead of the $14.90 under the original proposal. Georgia Power plans to submit a second rate increase proposal in February to cover the cost of higher fuel prices.
