Georgia Power has announced extensive plans for new energy infrastructure in Floyd and Bartow counties, including new natural gas plants and advanced battery storage systems, aiming to meet a projected surge in energy demand by 2030. The utility is currently seeking approval from the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) for these significant projects, which are part of a larger statewide initiative to add approximately 9,900 megawatts of new resources across Georgia.

The proposed upgrades center on expanding existing facilities in Northwest Georgia. At Plant Hammond in Floyd County, Georgia Power plans a significant 192.5-megawatt (MW) expansion of its Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), building upon its existing 57.5 MW Phase 1 system, according to Coosa Valley News.

Meanwhile, Plant Bowen in Bartow County is slated for new natural gas units with a substantial total capacity of 1,482 MW, as reported by Morningstar.

These projects are part of a broader statewide effort by Georgia Power to modernize its grid and ensure reliability. The utility emphasizes that these additions are crucial for ensuring grid stability from 2029 through 2031 and for adequately addressing the state’s rapidly growing energy demands.

The selection of these specific resources followed an “all-source” request for proposals (RFP) process, which was approved as part of Georgia Power’s 2022 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP). This process allows the utility to consider a diverse range of energy generation and storage technologies to find the most cost-effective and reliable solutions for its customers.

The utility’s plans are now subject to review and approval by the Georgia Public Service Commission. The PSC’s decision will be critical in determining the future of these multi-million dollar infrastructure investments, which are vital for the economic growth and stability of the region and the entire state.

As Georgia continues to experience significant industrial and population growth, the demand for electricity is projected to rise considerably.
