The Georgia Public Service Commission will be voting later this month on a requested 12% increase for Georgia Power customers.

Georgia Power says that they need the extra money for capital investments in the statewide power grid.  Georgia Power says that the infrastructure in the state is aging and dates back some 70 years and without the increase, the company will not be able to adequately supply the power needed for their service area.

Consumer advocates disagree and have spoken out against the rate increase at a time when inflation is driving up the costs of goods and services in the Peach State.  The final decision on the rate hike will be left up to the Georgia Public Service Commission, an elected board that regulates utilities in the state.

The public service commission is set to vote on the rate hike on December 20th.
