A large crowd gathered in Rome this week as a Georgia State Senate subcommittee held a meeting for public input. The subcommittee is gathering information about service for adults with developmental disabilities in the Peach State.
The committee is co-chaired by Republican John Albers of Roswell and Democrat Sally Harral of Atlanta. The co-chairs agree that the state’s service to adults with developmental disabilities should be a bi-partisan issue.
The subcommittee is traveling around the state and by and large the consensus from the public is that the state needs to increase funding for service providers. The average pay for workers who deal with adults with developmental disabilities is a dismal $10.50 per hour and hasn’t increased in almost seven years.
There is also a critical lack of service providers for the over 13,000 Georgia adults with developmental disabilities.
The committees’ next meeting will be in Tifton on October 19th.
