This week at the Sunbelt Ag Expo, Tyler Harper, Georgia’s Agriculture Commissioner, highlighted the importance of road safety as the state enters its busy harvesting season. With increased traffic and a surge of oversized farm vehicles on the road, Harper urged motorists to remain vigilant while traveling through rural areas.

The message of road safety was further underscored by the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS), which has been actively working to reduce traffic fatalities on Georgia’s rural roads. “Everyone wearing a seatbelt will reduce the number of individuals dying in crashes daily,” emphasized Allen Poole, Director of the GOHS. The collaboration between the Georgia Department of Agriculture and the GOHS aims to raise awareness among drivers about the presence of farm vehicles during this critical time of year.

During the harvest season, it is vital for drivers to understand that farmers have the legal right to operate their equipment on public roadways. “Farmers will move over when possible to let following vehicles pass,” said Harper, noting that the visibility of farm equipment increases significantly during this period.

Representatives from the agriculture sector, including Wesley Webb of Georgia’s peanut industry, joined Poole to reinforce the message of road safety. Their united efforts focus on reminding all motorists to be alert, wear seatbelts, and refrain from using mobile devices while driving. As farmers play a crucial role in supporting Georgia’s economy, safe travel becomes paramount. With more farm equipment sharing the road, the partnership between agricultural leaders and highway safety officials is a proactive step towards ensuring the safety of all road users this harvest season.
