Despite growing impatience among some Georgians visible on social media, Governor Brian Kemp’s office maintains that the state is on track to distribute surplus tax refunds in line with previous years. As of Tuesday, $621 million has been returned to eligible and qualifying taxpayers, a significant jump from the $488 million reported on Friday.

The Georgia Department of Revenue (DOR) reiterated its commitment to issuing the vast majority of refunds by the second week of August to those who filed their 2024 returns in a timely manner. According to the DOR, the current pace of disbursement mirrors the successful implementation of the previous two surplus refund cycles.

“We understand that Georgians are eager to receive their refunds,” a spokesperson for the DOR stated. “We are working diligently to ensure these refunds are processed and distributed efficiently and accurately, following the same established procedures that have worked in the past.”

Governor Kemp announced last month that eligible taxpayers could expect to begin receiving their checks during the first week of June. The Department of Revenue is issuing the checks in batches to avoid any potential technical issues that could delay the process for everyone.

While the majority of Georgians will receive their refunds by mid-August, the DOR encourages taxpayers to check the status of their refund online through the DOR website. The department also reminds residents that any outstanding tax debts or unresolved issues with their tax returns could potentially impact the processing and distribution of their surplus refund.
