The Georgia Hospital Association says that they support streamlining Georgia’s certificate of need (CON) law, but the organization that represents hospitals across the state is not in favor of scrapping the law all together.
Some Republican leaders have called for an end to the CON law, which was adopted in 1979. The law requires health care providers to prove need in a community before they are allowed to build a new medical facility.
The Georgia Hospital Association has adopted a set of recommendations aimed at limiting the number of parties that can attempt to block approval of CON applications and reducing the time it takes to appeal adverse CON rulings but stops short of recommending with doing away with CON’s all together.
The statewide hospital organization says that studies show patients pay less in states that have CON laws as opposed to those where there is no regulation.
