Georgia Northwestern Technical College is highlighting a federally funded program that helps eligible students overcome financial challenges while pursuing college degrees, technical certificates and workforce training.

The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, commonly known as WIOA, provides financial assistance and support services to students who qualify, helping them prepare for careers in today’s workforce.

The program may help cover tuition, fees, textbooks, supplies and other education-related expenses. Eligible students may also receive assistance with transportation and childcare costs.

GNTC officials say the program is particularly valuable for individuals who might otherwise struggle to complete their education because of financial difficulties or family responsibilities.

One recent success story is Shannon Taylor of Chickamauga, who enrolled at GNTC in 2023 while working full-time, raising a child and attending college.

Taylor earned certificates in Domestic and Family Violence Specialist and Addiction Specialist in 2024 before graduating with an associate degree in Social Work in 2025.

She attended GNTC’s Walker County Campus in Rock Spring and became a first-generation college graduate.

During her studies, Taylor completed an internship at the Children’s Advocacy Center serving the Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit.

The organization hired her full-time in November 2024, and she now serves as its executive assistant.

Taylor credits the WIOA program with helping her manage the financial demands of college while balancing work and family responsibilities.

She said the program provided assistance with transportation, books and other expenses while also connecting her with additional resources.

Gena Williams, WIOA coordinator at GNTC, says the program helps students focus on completing their education and entering or returning to the workforce.

Williams said WIOA can be particularly beneficial for single parents, low-income students, veterans transitioning to civilian employment, displaced workers, individuals with disabilities and others facing barriers to employment.

The program is available at all six Georgia Northwestern Technical College campuses, and applications are accepted throughout the year.

Students generally are expected to attend full-time, maintain a grade point average of at least 2.0, demonstrate good attendance and meet other program requirements. Exceptions to full-time enrollment may be considered depending on the student’s course of study.

Program officials say WIOA assistance can also continue after graduation through job-search support and follow-up services as participants begin their careers.

The program is administered through WorkSource Georgia, with regional oversight and support provided by the Northwest Georgia Regional Commission.

GNTC officials encourage anyone considering technical education who is concerned about the cost to explore whether they qualify for assistance.
