Former Georgia Governor Roy Barnes has long been known as a strong supporter of agriculture.  Governor Barnes, who raises cattle himself, has joined with other rural Georgia residents to call on state leaders to prioritize rural agriculture, rural broadband and education.

The former Democratic governor said on Wednesday of this past week, “We are Georgians who are concerned that rural issues are too often ignored and rural residents are too often left behind. We want to make sure these priorities are top of mind for Georgia lawmakers.”

Rural Voices USA is a national nonprofit focused on rural issues. Members of the organization’s Georgia steering committee developed a list of policy proposals they say Peach State policymakers should consider.

One of the top priorities is to create a rural economic development fund to incentivize investment in rural communities.  Also, the group wants state leaders to focus on rural broadband and address rural healthcare.
