In a move celebrating both Georgia’s rich traditions and the substantial economic contributions of a thriving industry, Governor Brian Kemp has officially proclaimed August as Shooting Sports Month in Georgia. This annual designation aims to encourage residents of all experience levels to safely engage in shooting sports activities throughout the month.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division (WRD) is spearheading the initiative, urging Georgians to visit public ranges, learn new skills, and safely enjoy the various facets of shooting sports.

The proclamation underscores the deep-rooted role that hunting and shooting sports have played in Georgia’s history, culture, and heritage. Each year, millions of Georgia residents – both young and old – participate in these activities, reinforcing a long-standing tradition.

Beyond its cultural significance, the shooting sports and hunting industry provides a substantial boost to the state’s economy. In 2024 alone, the sector contributed an estimated $2.7 billion to Georgia’s economy and supports nearly 11,000 jobs across the state.

Furthermore, the state received over $19.2 million in conservation funding in 2024 through the Pittman-Robertson Act. This vital funding, derived from federal excise taxes on firearms, ammunition, and archery equipment purchased by sportsmen and women, is directed back to states for work that supports wildlife and habitat management, benefiting all Georgians.

To celebrate Shooting Sports Month, the WRD is inviting Georgians of all skill levels to visit one of the state’s many accessible public shooting ranges. Georgia boasts more than 45 public archery and shooting ranges available statewide, many of which are conveniently located on public lands such as Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) and Public Fishing Areas (PFAs). These facilities offer safe and accessible environments for individuals to learn new skills, practice existing ones, and enjoy the sport responsibly.
