A school resource officer in Dade County was notified about a gun in a classroom on Tuesday morning.
The firearm was located under a bookshelf and unloaded, but had 10 rounds of ammunition inside the gun case.
The SRO immediately took possession of the firearm, and a search was conducted, with nothing additional being discovered.
The Dade County Sheriff’s Office and the Dade County School Board said that they take all instances like this very seriously, and we are investigating this aggressively.
Dade County Sheriff Phil Cross requested an additional presence of law enforcement at the schools on Wednesday, just as a precautionary measure.
Sheriff Cross said, “This was discovered by an observant and vigilant teacher, and handled well by the School System. There is no active threat at this time, and the investigation is ongoing.”
