AN UNLOADED HANDGUN WAS DISCOVERED IN A STUDENT’S VEHICLE AT LAFAYETTE HIGH SCHOOL FRIDAY MORNING.  POLICE WERE CONTACTED AND THE UN-NAMED STUDENT WAS SUSPENDED FROM SCHOOL… IN ACCORDANCE WITH STANDARD POLICY.

IT STATES IN PART:  A STUDENT SHALL NOT POSSESS, USE, HANDLE OR TRANSMIT ANY OBJECT THAT CAN BE CONSIDERED A WEAPON.   STUDENTS WHO POSSESS FIREARMS ON CAMPUS WILL BE SUBJECT TO A MINIMUM OF A ONE CALENDAR YEAR SUSPENSION AND REFERRED TO LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS.

THE STUDENT IN QUESTION WILL BE REFERRED FOR A TRIBUNAL HEARING TO DETERMINE DISCIPLINARY ACTION… ACCORDING TO THE LAFAYETTE HIGH SCHOOL STATEMENT ON THE INCIDENT.

ANOTHER STUDENT TOLD SCHOOL OFFICIALS ABOUT THE PRESENCE OF THE UNLOADED WEAPON BEFORE THE BEGINNING OF THE SCHOOL DAY.   IN A MESSAGE TO PARENTS, PRINCIPAL ROGER HIBBS SAID "THERE APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN NO AGGRESSIVE INTENT OR ACTION TOWARD OTHER STUDENTS.  AT NO TIME WERE STUDENTS OR STAFF PLACED AT RISK… AND THE INVESTIGATION WILL CONTINUE."
