Gordon County Man Arrested for Rape After Manhunt

One person was killed and two others severely injured Saturday afternoon in Gordon County after a driver, fleeing law enforcement, caused a head-on collision by driving the wrong way into oncoming traffic. The incident, which began as an erratic driving report, escalated into a high-speed pursuit before ending in tragedy on State Route 53.

According to the Gordon County Sheriff’s Office, the events unfolded at approximately 2:40 PM Saturday when a deputy sheriff was stationed on the I-75 Southbound Exit 317 entrance ramp. A Mercedes automobile passed the patrol car, nearly striking it, prompting the deputy to follow.

The Mercedes was observed driving erratically, making rapid lane changes, as it continued south to Exit 312 (Fairmount Highway). When the deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop, the driver of the Mercedes aggressively sped away at a high rate of speed, initiating a pursuit.

The chase continued east on Fairmount Highway, with the initial deputy soon joined by others. The violator then turned onto the State Route 53 Bypass near Blackwood, continuing to flee back toward Calhoun. During this time, the Mercedes reached speeds well in excess of 100 miles per hour, recklessly outpacing the pursuing deputies.

The pursuit reached a critical juncture at the intersection of the Bypass and State Route 53/Rome Road. At this point, the driver of the Mercedes made the dangerous decision to cross the roadway and drive the wrong way into oncoming (westbound) traffic, demonstrating what authorities described as a “reckless, irresponsible, and total disregard for the safety of any other person.”

Deputies, prioritizing public safety, immediately terminated their pursuit as the violator entered oncoming lanes. Within moments, the Mercedes collided head-on with a Honda CRV.

The impact was severe, and both vehicles quickly caught fire. Deputies, who had discontinued the pursuit but were still nearby, rushed to the scene. They immediately began attempting to remove the injured occupants from the burning cars and administer first aid.

Emergency Medical Services and Fire/Rescue personnel arrived swiftly to extricate and treat the victims. One occupant of the Honda CRV was pronounced dead at the scene, and two other occupants suffered severe injuries. All three injured persons, including the driver of the Mercedes who was also severely hurt, were airlifted via helicopter for urgent medical care.

The identity of both of the deceased was not immediately released, pending notification of next of kin.

The Georgia State Patrol is conducting a comprehensive investigation into the crash, working in conjunction with the Gordon County Coroner’s Office.
