The Chattooga County Historical Society will be holding their first meeting of the year today at the Historic Summerville Depot at 3 PM. The first meeting this year will feature Trail of Tears Represenatives Jeff Bishop and Leslie Barker Thomas President and Vice President of the Georgia Chapter of the Trail of Tears Association.
Jeff Bishop is a Journalist from Newnan, GA and a noted authority and lecturer on Cherokee History. Leslie Barker Thomas is from Ellijay GA. and is a member and past president of the Gilmer County Historical Society. In addition to being a noted authority on Cherokee History she is a genealogist specializing in Native Americans.
Also there will be Cherokee Represenatives Alva and Nancy Crowe of Ringold GA. Both have Cherokee Ancestry and are members of TOTA as well as the Catoosa County Historical Society.
They have presented many programs on Cherokees, especially at the Red Clay Pow Wows.
Membership in the Chattooga County Historical Society is open to the public at a cost of $15 per family per year.
