After Chattooga County property owners received their property tax assessments in the mail earlier this month, the Chattooga County Board of Assessors has seen a record-number of property tax assessment appeals.

As of last week, the number had approached 800 appeals, and it is likely the number of people wanting to appeal the significant increases in their property values may top 1,000.  What is not clear is how the board of assessors will be able to handle that many appeals.

The Chattooga County Board of Assessors says that they will be looking at some problem areas where some of the poorer communities in the county have seen property values skyrocket and working with the company that was hired to help with the property assessments to correct those problem areas.

In the meantime, Chattooga County property owners have about three weeks left to appeal those property tax assessments.
