If you shop at Ingles Supermarket in Summerville, you probably know by now that masks are being required for all customers and employees.

The policy went in place on Tuesday of this week and management of Ingles says that they are implementing the requirement to help protect workers and those that shop at their stores.   In a press release earlier this week, Ingles representatives cited CDC recommendations regarding the role of face coverings in the fight against the spread of COVID-19.

The press release made clear the requirement will not apply to young children or to customers with medical conditions who are not able to wear face coverings. When asked how the store will enforce mask rules, Ingles CFO Ron Freeman said employees remain “ready to help our customers voluntarily cooperate.””We do not want confrontation,” he said. “Masks are one of the many things we can all do for each other to lessen and shorten the impact of a virus that has affected all of us.”

Ingles will continue enhanced sanitation practices, particularly those of high-touch surfaces, the release said. “Our one-way aisles to encourage social distancing remain in place, as will our Plexiglas sneeze guards.”

Signs announcing the requirement have been posted at all Ingles store entrances, the press release said. The grocery store will also repeatedly broadcast in-store announcements.

The press release made clear the requirement will not apply to young children or to customers with medical conditions who are not able to wear face coverings.
