An inmate at the Chattooga County Jail was found unresponsive in his cell on Thursday.  Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader released the following statement shortly after 5 PM on Thursday evening:

Early Thursday morning, December 15, 2022, an inmate at the Chattooga County Jail was found in his cell unresponsive. Jail officers rendered aid  until EMS arrived. The inmate was pronounced deceased by the Coroner. As standard protocol, the GBI was called in to investigate the death. At this time the inmate appears to have died from a self-inflicted injury. More information may be available from the GBI at a later time.
