Authorities are continuing their investigation after two badly decomposed adult bodies were discovered Tuesday night in a residence near Chattooga High School on Lyerly Highway, leaving many questions unanswered about their identities and the circumstances surrounding their deaths.

The grim discovery was made after concerned neighbors reported an unsettling lack of activity at the home for several days, coupled with the alarming sight of buzzards circling overhead. Responding to the reports, law enforcement officers entered the residence late Tuesday, where they found the two adult bodies in an advanced state of decomposition.

The bodies were promptly transported to the GBI Crime Lab for examination and identification. Chattooga County Coroner Jeremy “Big Mac” McElhaney addressed the ongoing investigation Thursday night, emphasizing the challenges faced by investigators.

McElhaney told WZQZ News, “They were in bad shape and will possibly have to be ID’d by the medical examiner through DNA. We are pretty certain who they are but GBI won’t let us speculate since they can’t be ID’d visually.”

Due to the advanced state of decomposition, visual identification is impossible, necessitating forensic methods like DNA analysis to confirm the identities of the deceased. While authorities reportedly have a strong indication of the individuals’ identities, official confirmation awaits the results from the GBI Crime Lab.

The GBI (Georgia Bureau of Investigation) is leading the forensic examination to determine not only the identities but also the cause and manner of death.

The investigation remains active, and officials have not released further details as they work to piece together the events that led to the tragic discovery.
