Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit Chief Superior Court Judge Kristina Cook Graham made the decision on Thursday to suspend the work of all grand juries in the circuit; this after jurors came in contact with persons who subsequently became ill and tested positive for COVID-19.

Graham is shutting down all grand juries across the Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit which includes, Chattooga, Dade, Walker and Catoosa counties.

The judge is calling for an online meeting with the district attorney’s office and the courthouse security staff from each county. The meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday.

The purpose of the meeting is to “address this problem and complete a plan for the resumption of Grand Jury proceedings that will better address the public health concerns for all,” Judge Graham stated in her order today.

Local officials were supposed to follow suggested health protocols given by the Georgia Supreme Court.

“All involved were apprised of the suggested protocols for resumption of grand jury proceedings published by the Supreme Court of Georgia and agreed to follow them. On November 17, 2020, grand jury proceedings were conducted in Chattooga County and numerous protocols were not adhered to. At least two participants are currently ill and COVID positive,” the order stated.
