Chattooga County Election Superintendent Jon Payne says that no one has contacted him with any official complaint about the election on Tuesday, and that he is limited by law as to what he can do regarding a recount.

Reports on Thursday indicated that some candidates were not happy with the problems that went on during the election.  Chattooga County election officials say that the problems all had to do with the new voting machines and that they are confident in the results that were finally released on Wednesday afternoon.

Judge Payne told WZQZ News on Thursday evening “I haven’t heard anything from anyone yet concerning a recount.  Nobody’s contacted me.”  Judge Payne says that talk of a recount is irrelevent until all the provisional ballots are counted and the election has been certified with the Secretary of State’s office.  Provisional ballots will be counted sometime this afternoon.

Payne added that after the election is certified, candidates could go to Superior Court and ask a judge to order a recount, but by law, he can’t order a recount on his own.

The main concern for some voters is the close race in the Republican Primary for county commissioner.  Blake Elsberry has a slim lead over incumbent Commissioner Jason Winters and third-place candidate Jeff Coley is within three percentage points of Commissioner Winters’ totals.
