A hearing on an emergency request by Georgia Governor Brian Kemp to stop Atlanta from enforcing its mask mandate other restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic while the lawsuit is pending was canceled Tuesday after judges recused themselves. The case has been reassigned and the hearing is now set for July 28.

The Georgia Municipal Association, in a brief filed in the case, says city mask orders are legal and Kemp can’t stop them in public, or on public property, as he seeks to do.

On Thursday, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms hinted that a possible compromise could be on the horizon regarding the legal dispute between her and Gov. Brian Kemp. The mayor went on to say that she and the governor have the same goal of keeping citizens as safe as possible and reducing the spread of the coronavirus.

In a statement released Thursday morning Gov. Kemp’s office says the conversation with Mayor Bottoms was “productive.”
