The Georgia Department of Revenue has begun issuing one-time state income tax refunds to eligible taxpayers this week, as announced by Governor Brian Kemp on Monday. This marks the third such rebate provided to Georgians this decade, following approval by the General Assembly during the recent legislative session.

“Because we’ve managed our state’s resources wisely, we’re again able to return money to hardworking Georgians who know best how to use it,” said Governor Kemp. “Along with our acceleration of the largest income tax rate cut in state history, this latest refund is just one more way we’re working to support the people of our state, their families, and their businesses.” The refunds will provide much-needed relief to taxpayers across the state.

Single filers and those married filing separately will receive up to $250, while heads of households will receive $375. Married couples filing jointly are eligible for a rebate of up to $500. This initiative builds on previous efforts by the state, which issued similar one-time tax rebates in 2022 and 2023. To qualify for this latest refund, most taxpayers must have filed both their 2023 and 2024 individual income tax returns on time, paid into the state tax system, and not owe any outstanding taxes to the state.

Eligible residents can anticipate receiving their rebate in the coming weeks. For those unsure about their eligibility, the Georgia Department of Revenue has launched the Surplus Tax Refund Eligibility Tool, accessible through the Georgia Tax Center. By entering their tax year, Social Security or Tax Identification Number, and Federal Adjusted Gross Income, taxpayers can quickly determine if they qualify for the refund. This tool provides a convenient and accessible way for Georgians to check their status and understand the benefits being offered by the state.
