Georgia Governor Brian Kemp (R) and Attorney General Chris Carr have both taken large campaign contributions from a Missouri-based insurer that is facing pharmacy-billing allegations in Georgia.
St. Louis-based Centene Corporation has already paid over $485 million in legal settlements with thirteen states over similar allegations. Centene is the parent company of Peach State Health Plan, which delivers managed-care services to about 1 million low-income Georgians enrolled in Medicaid and PeachCare for Kids. It is one of three companies that typically receive more than $4 billion, combined, from the state annually to run the public health insurance programs.
Attorney General Carr’s campaign released a statement after the campaign contributions came to light this past week saying, “Attorney General Carr appreciates those who support his campaign, but all should understand the attorney general will vigorously defend his client — the people of Georgia — and handle every case before him legally, ethically and honestly”.
Governor Kemp’s campaign has not commented on the contribution.
