A pre-dawn house fire near Chickamauga tragically claimed the life of a LaFayette High School teacher Sunday morning, leaving his wife and two young children with serious injuries. The family’s home was completely destroyed in the blaze.

John Millican III, a revered teacher at LaFayette High School, was pronounced dead after being rescued from the burning residence at 127 Ridgewood Circle. His wife, Heather Millican, a Social Studies teacher at LaFayette Middle School, and their two children, ages 3 and 8, suffered serious injuries and are being transported to the Vanderbilt Burn Center in Nashville, Tennessee.

Walker County Fire Marshal Scott Forrest reported that dispatchers received a call at 7:38 a.m. concerning smoke inside the home. Within nine minutes, firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and fire engulfing the front of the residence.

While Heather Millican and her two children had managed to escape the burning structure, John Millican III was still trapped inside. Firefighters immediately launched a search and rescue operation, locating the teacher unconscious in a back bedroom. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.

The cause of the devastating fire remains under investigation by the Walker County Fire Marshal’s office. The home at 127 Ridgewood Circle is considered a total loss.

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the local community, particularly the LaFayette school system, where both parents were dedicated educators. Further details are expected as the investigation continues.
