A twenty-three-year-old LaFayette man was arrested by the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office for driving under the influence on January 5th.  According to a report released late last week by the sheriff’s office, a deputy was operating radar at Stoleman Road and Highway 27 north of Trion when he clocked a car doing 75 mph in a 55 mph speed zone.  The deputy initiated a traffic stop near Halls Valley Road and spoke with the driver, identified as Austin Lee Tiffin.

The deputy said that Tiffin’s eyes were bloodshot and that he could smell the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.  The deputy asked Tiffin how much weed he had smoked and he told the deputy that it was CBD and handed him some packaging from a CBD product.  When asked if he felt high, Tiffin told the deputy that he felt “just a little buzzed”.

After a field sobriety test, the deputy placed Tiffin under arrest for DUI for drugs.  Tiffin protested that the CBD he was using was legal and the deputy told Tiffin that DUI for drugs charges does not necessarily mean that the drug is illegal and that people can be charged with that same charge when they are taking prescription medications.

In addition to the DUI for drugs charges, Tiffin was charged with speeding and was booked into the Chattooga County Jail.
