This week, the Georgia Department of Public Health released information that indicates a large number of COVID-19 cases in the state can be attributed to the BA.5 variant.
Officials say that the variant accounts for around 65% of all COVID cases in Georgia, according to the latest numbers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.
The Georgia Department of Public Health is reminding Georgians that COVID vaccines and boosters have played a key role in reducing severe COVID outcomes like hospitalization and death. Public health officials say that most hospitalizations and deaths have been among those who are not vaccinated, and the greatest numbers of those dying are more than 70 years old.
Also, officials indicated that a second COVID-19 booster shot may be approved in the near future.
