A proposed 31-million dollar wind energy project is moving forward, although the future of a wind turbine on Cherokee Rock Village property is less certain.

David Savage (pictured) of Pioneer Green Energy told the Cherokee Parks and Recreation Board that if, at a later date, they decided not to allow a wind turbine in the park his company would not hold them to that option.

Board member Daphne Rogers then made a motion to take Savage up on the offer and to hold a public hearing to get input on the matter.

During the meeting, a number of residents spoke against putting a windmill in the park, saying it will be eye sore and will pose a danger to birds.

They also expressed health concerns related to ultrasonic noise.

One of those who spoke was Leesburg Mayor Ed Mackey, who asked why the windmills were even needed, saying “We don’t need the power in Cherokee County, and we don’t need the money.”

Savage says the project is 95-percent on private property but the idea to put a turbine in the park was driven by the vision that it could be a draw for tourists and a desire that was expressed to them that it would be a great way for the county to benefit economically.

Once again, a public forum will be held at a yet-to-be determined date to get input regarding the proposed turbine and visitor center at Cherokee Rock Village.
