Former Chattooga County School Supt. Jimmy Lenderman at Commissioner’s budget meeting Friday, December 13, 2019

Former Chattooga County School Superintendent Jimmy Lenderman was at Commissioner Jason Winters’ budget meeting last Friday.  That’s the same meeting where the commissioner’s wife, Abbey Winters, poured a drink over the head of a news-blog reporter and was subsequently arrested on disorderly conduct and simple battery charges.

Mr. Lenderman said that he was busy looking at the budget numbers presented by the commissioner before the start of the meeting and did not see what happened with the reporter when it took place.  However, after the meeting Commissioner Jason Winters accused Mr. Lenderman of being at the meeting at the request of the reporter and told Lenderman that he was “associating with some nefarious people.”

Mr. Lenderman told the commissioner that he did not come to the meeting with anyone.  He said that he received an e-mail from the reporter in question, but he came to the meeting with no one and that he was there to “talk about the tax anticipation notes and the budget”, not to get involved in “personal squabbles.”

On Saturday, WZQZ News spoke with Mr. Lenderman, who confirmed that he is seriously looking at the possibility of running for Chattooga County Commissioner.  Mr. Lenderman told WZQZ News, “If someone had asked me on Thursday, if I was running, I would have told them ‘maybe’.  After that meeting on Friday the answer is – I am seriously considering it.”

Mr. Lenderman went on to say that the county’s finances are the main reason that he is considering running.  Lenderman says he has been encouraged to enter the Republican Primary for the office of Sole Commissioner by many people.  Lenderman told Commissioner Winters on Friday, “Everywhere I got people are asking me if I am running for commissioner.  I always ask them ‘why’ and that’s why I am here today (to find out about the county’s finances.)”

Current Commissioner Jason Winters has not publicly given any indication if he will seek a fourth term.
