Chattooga County residents who qualify for help paying winter heating bills can start applying now through the federally funded Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)—with priority currently given to households most at risk.
Here in Chattooga County, the first phase opened Monday, December 1, for homebound elderly residents ages 65 and older and medically homebound individuals who meet income guidelines. Eligible applicants can receive assistance with heating costs through direct payments to home energy suppliers, helping reduce the burden of higher winter utility bills.
Officials encourage residents to gather documentation early—such as identification, proof of income, and current utility bills—so applications aren’t delayed once appointments or phone lines open. LIHEAP funds are limited and are generally distributed first-come, first-served.
After the homebound/elderly phase wraps up, the program will expand. Other eligible Georgians will be able to schedule an appointment beginning January 2, 2026.
