The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program — better known as LIHEAPstarts TODAY for homebound and elderly households in Chattooga County. North Georgia Community Action is urging residents to call as soon as phone lines open at 8:30 a.m., as funding is limited and assistance is provided strictly on a first-come, first-served basis.

LIHEAP provides one-time financial help with winter heating costs, with payments sent directly to the household’s energy provider. For homes where every resident is elderly or homebound, this program can provide essential relief during the coldest months.

Residents MUST have the following information ready when they call:

  • Proof of income for every household member

  • Proof of citizenship

  • Social Security numbers for all household members

  • A current heating or electric bill

  • Proof of age for elderly households

Officials stress that LIHEAP staff cannot return voicemails. Callers must keep trying until they reach a representative — missing the initial call surge could mean missing out on assistance.

Chattooga County residents should call 706-857-0729 TODAY starting at 8:30 a.m.

LIHEAP funds for Chattooga County come from the federal government, distributed to Georgia through the Department of Human Services, and administered locally by North Georgia Community Action, Inc. These funds are limited each year and are offered until they run out.

Residents are strongly encouraged to have all documentation in hand before calling to avoid delays and improve their chances of receiving assistance.
