Chattooga County Commissioner Andy Allen is publicly commending local businessman Randy Patty for his critical assistance in containing a wildfire that threatened homes on Marks Hill this past Friday. According to the Sheriff’s Office, Patty’s actions were instrumental in preventing significant property damage.

The wildfire broke out on Marks Hill, prompting a rapid response from multiple agencies. Commissioner Allen expressed his “profound gratitude and admiration” for the swift and coordinated efforts of the Summerville, Trion, Lyerly, Menlo, Teloga, and Hays Fire Departments. He also acknowledged the valuable contributions of the Chattooga County C.E.R.T, Emergency Management Agency, the Summerville Police Department, and the Georgia Forestry Commission. “Their tireless work and coordinated response were instrumental in preventing further spread and ensuring the safety of our community,” stated Commissioner Allen.

In addition to the efforts of the emergency responders, Commissioner Allen specifically thanked Randy Patty for his significant contribution. “Mr. Patty brought out heavy equipment and assisted in putting a break around homes to help protect them on Friday,” Allen said. Patty’s proactive measures helped create a crucial firebreak, safeguarding homes from the encroaching flames.

The Summerville Fire Department issued a statement saying the 55+ – acre fire was the result of a homeowner burning outside on Friday, despite warnings about high fire danger conditions.  Residents are urged to not burn at this time as the dry conditions still persist.

The area does have a chance for rain by midweek, which could help with conditions.
