A longtime Chattooga educator passed away at his home this week.  Mr. Jack Herring was former principal at Chattooga High School from 1972-1988.  He also served as an assistant principal at the high school and as assistant school superintendent of the Chattooga County School System.

Mr. Herring, a native of Louisiana, was a graduate of Berry College.

After retiring as school principal, Mr. Herring ran in the Democratic Primary in a bid to become county school superintendent, back when school superintendents were elected.  Donny Hayes won that race, but Mr. Herring continued to serve the county school system in other capacities.

Mr. Herring passed away at his home at the age of 85 on Wednesday.

A scholarship fund in Mr. Herring’s honor has been established and the family is asking that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the fund.
