Things will be changing after today for folks at Cloudland. That’s because the long-time mail carrier, Janice Tucker, will be retiring after today. Janice has delivered the mail at Cloudland for over two decades and has forty years of service with the United States Postal Service.
After the Cloudland Post Office closed in the 1980’s, the mail carrier on the mountain inherited one of the longest mail routes in the area. Mountain folks continued to use “Cloudland” as their city, but share a zip code with Menlo.
The “Cloudland” route goes from the state line with Cherokee County and DeKalb County, Alabama and includes residents in Chattooga, Walker and even a small part of Dade County.
Janice Tucker isn’t just “the mail lady”. She also is a firefighter and first responder with the Cloudland Fire Department and she is a Registered Nurse who also works at Oakview Nursing Home.
Over the years, Janice has delivered mail to some of the most remote parts of Chattooga County. She’s chased livestock; delivered mail in snow and ice; worked countless accidents and fires, and still has taken time to check on the elderly mountain residents along her mail route.
A well deserved retirement, no doubt – but the mountain folks will miss Ms. Janice.
Happy Retirement to Janice Tucker
