State Representative Eddie Lumsden (R-Armuchee) says that the Georgia General Assembly will be tackling taxes when the legislature resumes for the 2023 session early next year.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp has already said that he will be asking the state legislature to consider reducing Georgia income taxes in the upcoming legislative session, and Rep. Lumsden said recently that lawmakers in Atlanta are also considering property tax relief for Georgia residents.

The average property rate paid per home value in Georgia is 0.83%. This means that in 2022, Georgia homeowners paid a median of $1,346 annually in property taxes based on a median of $162,800 in home value.  Georgia ranks 33rd in the nation in property tax burden.

Rep. Lumsden said that as home values have increased over the past two years, Georgia property owners have seen their property taxes increase as well, and while the legislature can’t do anything about the market forces driving property values up, the legislature will be looking at the state’s portion of  property tax  in the upcoming session.

Property owners in Chattooga County should remember that while a portion of their property taxes goes to the state, the county government and local school system also levy property taxes.
