The Georgia DOT is planning to make repairs to the Chattooga and Chickamauga Rail Road from Lyerly to Chickamauga this year.  The plans will allow for trains to run as far south as Lyerly for the first time in many years.

At Tuesday night’s meeting of the Lyerly Town Council, Mayor Jessica Eller told council members that passenger trains could come to Lyerly once the railroad repairs have been completed.  The mayor said that the town needed to be planning a way to load and unload passengers in Lyerly.  Mayor Eller told the council that they should look into the costs of constructing a depot at the park in Lyerly.

In the past passenger train rides have been available from Summerville to LaFayette – a ride that takes several hours.  With the repairs complete on the railroad, the passenger trains could run from Summerville to Lyerly for a shorter ride.
