A Lyerly man was charged with DUI shortly before noon last Thursday after a deputy observed him travelling at a high rate of speed on Trion-Teloga Road.
According to a report released yesterday, the deputy said that a grey pickup truck went by going 95 miles-per-hour. The truck veered over the center line several times as the deputy attempted to make a traffic stop. The deputy caught up with the truck just east of Melba Drive. The Ford truck pulled into Victory Fuels where the deputy then spoke with the driver.
The driver was identified as fifty-year-old Bobby Ray Sumner. The deputy discovered that Mr. Sumner’s license was suspended and the tag on the truck was suspended as well.
While speaking to Sumner, the deputy noticed a strong smell of alcohol. After submitting to sobriety tests, Mr. Sumner began to get irate and cuss at law enforcement officers.
Deputies said that they found a bottle of Smirnoff Vodka inside the truck. About three-quarters of the vodka had been consumed.
Sumner was charged with DUI for alcohol, driving with suspended or revoked license, driving with invalid registration, reckless driving, no insurance and open container of alcohol.
