The Town of Lyerly had a heated council work session last Tuesday.  At the meeting Lyerly Mayor Jessica Eller told council members that she had instituted new policies that prohibit town council members from entering the town clerk’s office.  Some council members disagree with the policy and question the mayor’s ability to enforce policies without approval from the council.

Also at issue is the town’s charter.  The charter at the Town Hall in Lyerly differs from the charter on file with the state in several areas.  One of those areas deals with the council’s authority to over-ride the mayor’s veto power.  The charter on file with the state says:

"Ordinances vetoed by the mayor shall be presented by the clerk to the council at its next regular meeting and should the council then or at its next regular meeting adopt the ordinance by an affirmative vote of four of its members, excluding the mayor, it shall become law."

The charter at the Lyerly Town Hall says that it takes five council members to over-ride the mayor’s veto.

The Lyerly Town Council will meet again for their regular monthly meeting this Tuesday at 7 PM.
