A fifty-two-year-old man was accused of “skip scanning” at Walmart in Trion but was not taken to jail immediately by sheriff’s deputies.

According to a report from the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office, Emelio Estaban was observed scanning one pack of chicken and placing another pack in a grocery bag without scanning it.  Estaban was approached by a Walmart loss prevention officer and detained until a deputy arrived on the scene.

Mr. Estaban had four juveniles with him at the time of the incident and told the responding deputy that he had no one to call to come pick up the children.  The deputy agreed to allow Mr. Estaban go with the children if he promised to turn himself in at the jail later – if not, there would warrants issued for his arrest.  Mr. Estaban agreed, and according to arrest records, did report to the jail later in the week.
